The law is always on the side of those who assert it. Ethics or juristic consciousness have little to do with it. The real question is who is in power. (Frank Herbert)
This is all too true and it bothers me to see how a small group of people in charge can force their will upon millions and can get away with it.
Once at a party this man, a talented and quite intelligent person, started lamenting about how bad his life was, how oppressed he felt: went on and on about how he was forced to do things that he does not want to do in his life. 'If I had anything to say around here' he bellowed 'they’d stop polluting this planet, there wouldn't be wars nor hunger etc. etc., but they do what they want, those politicians, they should all be shot!' 'And then what?' I asked. He gave me one of those glances - you know the one, the one that makes you feel you just stole granny's dentures. I tried again: 'What do you think would happen then?' - No answer. 'Oh, forget it,' I said, 'just answer me one question: What have you done lately to stop the things you just accused?'. 'What can a man do?!' he replied, 'I'm not in power!'.
How many times have I heard this sentence or similar ones, it frustrates me. Every one of us has the power to change what he or she thinks needs to be changed. It is a myth that one alone cannot set examples and changes the face of this earth by living one beliefs. It has been done manifold.
If some hadn't had the courage to start a new path and to fight for what they believe to be true - What would the world look like today? Where one man or woman goes, others will follow.
If you sit at home whining, some other may set path and achieve goals that you might not like to see established or achieved. Of course you are not responsible for what others do, but you are clearly responsible for the things you do not do.
People tend to wait for some messiah to set wrong into right, what they like to forget is that they themselves have the power to do it. Christians say: 'God helps those who help themselves.' Which in my interpretation means: 'Find a solution to your problem and Mannon, Goddess , God, Buddha ,Shiva the Universe will help you to go through with your plans.'
It is like the story of the holy man and the flood: The holy man sat in front of his house, a villager came by to warn him of a forthcoming flood. 'Don't worry about me' he said, 'God will save me.' The flood came and the water was so high that the holy man had to move to second floor. A boat came by with a man inside. 'Come with me.' the man said. 'Oh no,' the holy man replied, 'God is going to save me.' A day later the holy man had to take place on the roof of his house because the water had risen so high. A helicopter came by and the pilot said: 'Come with me holy man or you will surely drown.' 'Oh no,' our holy man said, 'God will save me.' The water went higher and higher and holy man drowned. As he arrived in heaven and was presented to God he angrily asked God: 'Why didn't you save me, what did I do to deserve this?' God smiled and answered: 'For goodness sake, man. First I sent the villager, then I sent the boat, and after that the helicopter - What else do you think I should have done?'
I'm not saying: 'Be the next prophet', but it is possible to choose what one would like to do or not. If you do not go conform with something, openly oppose it! Be it a state law, a mindset etc. Stand up for what you believe in, if it is not possible for you to live according to your own ethics and conscience then go somewhere were you can!
If you are against war - don't join the military, make yourself and your opinion heard, find people with similar views and unite. Don't buy products from countries who are known to be aggressors. Teach people other ways of ending political conflicts. Support humanitarian organizations. Start working for the things you hold important instead of lamenting about things you don't want. Take up your responsibility as a human being and act, try to create new ways of dealing with things you oppose to.
You hold the power within you to be all that you want to be, there is absolutely nothing that can force you to something, there's always a choice. Educate yourself, because knowledge is power. Learn how the system works before you try to change it. Do not fear, for no effort is meaningless if it is pure in motive. Free yourself and you free the world.
The law is made for man and not man for the law. If you feel that man-made law goes against everything you stand for - fight it! The only laws you should follow are the ones you know to be true. Do not make others the judge of your actions, and do not let others make themselves the judge of your actions. Always remember that you are completely responsible for what you decide to do and you should be man or woman enough to hold up for the consequences.
Claim your right for freedom and grant same freedom for others. To say it in the words of someone wiser than I: Why cry for justice when we can establish our own. Why lament when we still have the freedom and the means to use it.
This also means: If you feel that you would like to take the freedom to kill, maim and oppress - go ahead, but be sure that others including myself will take the freedom to stop you. It is as easy as that!
